Guaynabo Mets Sign Two Players, Announce New Crypto Partnership

The Guaynabo Mets of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) continue to make moves solidifying their position as not only one of the top teams in the league, but also one of the most forward-thinking.

With a month to go until the start of the regular season, the Mets have signed John Henson and Jeff Early. Henson, a former NBA lottery pick and the Mets’ first import signing of 2022, played in 445 regular season games for Milwaukee, Cleveland, and Detroit, averaging 7.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-9 big man won back-to-back ACC Defensive Player of the Year awards as a member of the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Early, a native Puerto Rican player, has four years of BSN experience, most recently in 2020 for Fajardo, where he averaged 8.4 points per game. He adds backcourt depth to a Guaynabo team that earlier this offseason re-signed Tyquan Rolon and Jonathan Han.

Guaynabo is also pleased to announce a groundbreaking partnership with the Miami Tech Runs (MTR) community. Founded by Derrick Thomas, MTR is a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) in the crypto-sports space with a mission to educate, inspire, connect, and grow tech and startup ecosystems.

“MTR is positioning itself to be the gateway to Web 3.0 expansion,” said Thomas. “We see this as a natural outcome of our shared visions.”

MTR’s partnership with the Mets is led by Thomas and Trevor McFedries, creative entrepreneurs and leading proponents of Web 3.0, which prioritizes decentralization, transparency, privacy, and personal data ownership using technologies such as blockchain, cryptocurrency, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

“Crypto, NFTs, and DAOs help to break down barriers and build new, more collaborative communities,” said McFedries. “This partnership with the Mets is an opportunity to use some of the same concepts from Web 3 to explore, rethink—and ultimately to enhance—the relationship between the team, its players, and the fans.”

Bringing together sports and crypto, the Mets-MTR partnership is a first-of-its-kind collaboration in the BSN that furthers the Mets mission of changing the game, both on and off the court.

“The game of basketball is constantly evolving, and it’s not just the way the game is played, but the way fans watch the game and interact with players and teams,” said Mets co-owner Marc Grossman. “We are constantly introducing new technologies to enhance the fan experience, such as streaming games for free on social media. The team views this new partnership as another step in building a better, more interactive experience for our fans.”

The Mets and MTR will hold a free exhibition game on March 26 at Mario Morales Coliseum. All attendees will receive a proof of attendance NFT, and token holders will be able to unlock special perks throughout the Mets 2022 season. The event will be open to the public. Mets fans are highly encouraged to come and claim their free digital token.
