The Guaynabo Mets will begin their redemption season on July 11 against Guayama, and they’ll do so with a new NBA-level center, the team is announcing.
Diamond Stone is set to join Guaynabo as an import player for the 2021 Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) season five years removed from being drafted 40th overall by the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA draft. Stone, a former McDonald’s All American and five-star recruit, played one season at Maryland and entered the draft as a highly-touted prospect with a good combination of size, strength, and skill. He played for the Los Angeles Clippers during his rookie season and has since spent time in the G League, where he averaged 13.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
The big man’s strong post play, combined with his shooting touch and ability to run the floor, gives Guaynabo Head Coach Christopher Thomas another versatile piece to use in the team’s high-powered offense.
“The addition of Diamond Stone is going to bring even more size, strength, versatility, and athleticism to our roster,” said Thomas. “He is an incredible talent who, at 25 years old, is only scratching the surface of the player he can become. I am impressed with his huger and motivation and know that he is going to be a huge asset to our team.”
It’s been a busy offseason for Guaynabo, as the team re-signed David Stockton and Angel Nunez, signed Renaldo Balkman, agreed to a loan agreement for E.J. Crawford, and traded for Kevin Young. They hope to have added the missing pieces to the championship puzzle after coming up just short last season.
Out for redemption in 2021, Guaynabo starts the season at Guayama and then returns home for a July 17 matchup with Bayamón—the team that knocked them out of the bubble tournament in December. The Mets next will play four road games before returning for four straight home games in Mario Morales Coliseum, where the team has not played in front of fans in more than a year.
“Playing without our fans last season just wasn’t the same,” said Mets co-owner Marc Grossman. “We really missed the energy they bring night in and night out and look forward to Mets nation once again providing us with a boost this season.”
To celebrate the return of Mets basketball, the team is offering a special season ticket package that features 16 regular season games, postseason games, premier parking, a team meet and greet, official team gear, and savings on merchandise and concession purchases.
