GUAYNABO METS TRADE ALI BERDIEL FOR KEVIN YOUNG

 JUNE 22, 2021  METSBASKETBALL

The Guaynabo Mets have executed a trade that will send Miguel Ali Berdiel to the Brujos de Guayama in exchange for Kevin Young, the team announced on Friday.

Young, a 6-foot-8 forward, has played six seasons in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN), in addition to spending time in the NBA G League and professional leagues in Mexico, Canada, and Argentina. He has also represented Puerto Rico at the international level. Young was named Defensive Player of the Year as a member of the Halifax Rainmen of Canada’s National Basketball League (NBL). He played collegiate basketball at Loyola Marymount and the University of Kansas and made his BSN debut in 2013 with Guayama.

Young’s best BSN season came as a member of the Indios de Mayaguez during the 2015 – 2016 season, when he averaged 10.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game while scoring double figures in 18 out of 25 contests and recording 7 double-doubles.

“Kevin is a gifted player who really brings it on both ends of the floor,” said Guaynabo Head Coach Chris Thomas. “I have admired his game since his time at Kansas and watched him add to it over his pro career. His length and athletic ability will help us offensively and defensively. We cannot wait to get him on the court and get started.”

To acquire Young, the Mets parted ways with BSN veteran Miguel Ali Berdiel, who has played in the BSN since 1999 for 8 different franchises.

“I am extremely grateful for everything Ali did for our organization and for myself during his time in Guaynabo,” said Thomas. “His leadership, effort, and unique talent made my first year in the BSN so much easier. While I am sad to see him go, I know that more great things await him.”

Berdiel averaged 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game last season for Guaynabo while providing his usual stellar defense.

“Ali was an outstanding contributor and teammate during his time here and we wish him all the best in the next chapter of his career,” said Mets co-owner Marc Grossman. “At the same time, we’re excited to have Kevin on board. He fits seamlessly into our fast paced offensive philosophy.”The BSN season is scheduled to begin July 8.
