GUAYNABO METS SIGN AMIDA BRIMAH, RELEASE ANGEL NUNEZ

The Guaynabo Mets of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) have released Angel Nunez and signed Amida Brimah, a defensive force who has spent most of his professional career in the NBA G League.

“Amida can be a rim protector like we have not had to date,” said Head Coach Brad Greenberg. “He is a completely different player than Angel and we will need to make some tactical adjustments to utilize his strengths. It will also require adjustments from other players whose roles may change.”

A native of Ghana, Brimah spent four years at the University of Connecticut, where he won a national championship, made the American Athletic Conference All-Rookie team, and earned 2015 AAC Defensive Player of the Year honors after posting a conference-record 101 blocks. Brimah played in NBA summer leagues with the Chicago Bulls, Brooklyn Nets, and San Antonio Spurs. He also spent two seasons as a member of the Austin Spurs, a stint that saw him lead the G League in blocks in the 2017-2018 season. The Indiana Pacers signed Brimah to a two-way contract in April and he appeared in five games.

“Amida’s elite shot-blocking could provide the defensive presence we’ve been lacking,” said Mets owner Marc Grossman. “He also has the ability to impact games as a rebounder and a pick and roll player.”

The addition of Brimah is the Mets’ second major shakeup this month. Last week, the team made a coaching change that paid immediate dividends, as Greenberg led Guaynabo to a thrilling 102-100 victory over previously undefeated Bayamón. The Mets have also gotten a strong contribution from newcomer Tony Bishop. Bishop has been one of the best players in the league since joining Guaynabo from Santurce, averaging 21.8 points and 10 rebounds over 8 games. He and David Stockton will represent the Mets at the BSN All-Star Game, which is scheduled for September 11 at the Manuel Petaca Iguina Coliseum in Arecibo.

“The season hasn’t played out the way we drew it up, but we are still in a great position to succeed,” said Mets owner Mark Linder. “We saw this team really hit its stride late last season and I believe that our best basketball is still in front of us.”

Guaynabo enters the All-Star Game break in 4th place in the BSN’s B Division, a game and a half back from third place Santurce and three and a half games back from second place Guayama. A Cowboys rematch looms on the other side of the BSN All-Star Game on September 14. It’s the first game in a stretch that will see the Mets play five games against Bayamon, Santurce, Humacao, and Quebradillas over nine days. The Mets close out the regular season on October 6 at home versus Guayama.All-Star Game Tickets are available at ticketera.com. For Mets tickets, visit Metsbasketball.com/tickets.
