OCTOBER 6, 2020 METSBASKETBALL
Alfredo Morales has informed the Guaynabo Mets of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) that he is stepping down as the team’s General Manager. Morales built a competitive roster for the Mets’ return as an expansion franchise for the 2020 season, which was halted in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I wish nothing but the best for Alfredo,” said Mets co-owner Marc Grossman. “While his loss will be felt across our organization, we are excited to participate in the upcoming tournament and focused on getting the team ready to play.”
The BSN announced in September it will resume the season on November 10 at the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort, a 48,000 square foot conference center in Río Grande. Using a “bubble” season similar to the one used by the National Basketball Association (NBA), 10 teams will play 45 regular season games, with 8 teams advancing to the postseason. The quarterfinals will have a best-of-three format and the semifinals and finals will have a best-of-five format. BSN said in a statement that the event will have rigorous health protocols to prevent and mitigate risks related to COVID-19.
In their first season since 2015, the Mets played in front of large crowds at Mario Morales Coliseum and averaged 35,000 livestream viewers per game. After a long COVID-related layoff, they now look to bolster their squad and make a run at the franchise’s fourth championship.
Native players Jonathan Han, Miguel Ali Berdiel, Weyinmi Rose, Rafael Pérez, Carlos Emory, Tyquan Rolón, Ánsel Guzmán, and Wilmer Lugo remain on the Mets’ tournament roster. Mets ownership is in the process of interviewing several candidates for the vacant GM position. They are also speaking to potential imports, including several international standouts. The team has been in contact with players, coaches, and executives from around the world with NBA experience and plans to announce high-profile additions in the weeks leading up to the season restart. To stay up to date on all official Mets news, visit Metsbasketball.com or follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
