GUAYNABO METS ANNOUNCE LEADERSHIP HIRES TO START 2021 SEASON

Looking to build on a successful 2020 campaign, the Guaynabo Mets have announced the return of Head Coach Christopher Thomas and the hiring of Ana Ojeda as vice president of basketball operations.

Ojeda, who previously served as the team’s attorney, will manage the front office of a Mets club that came within one win of the finals last season.

“I am grateful to the organization for the trust they placed in me from the beginning of this journey,” said Ojeda. “There are not many women who hold executive positions in the sports world. However, Mark Linder and Marc Grossman did not hesitate to look past my gender and focus on my education, experience, and love for sports.”

Thomas led the Mets on an impressive postseason run in the bubble tournament at the Wyndham Resort in Río Grande. In an expanded role he will serve as both head coach and general manager.  I am extremely proud and honored to be coming back this season as the head coach and GM of the Guaynabo Mets,” said Thomas.

“I am excited to work alongside Ana as well as the rest of the talented front office, the coaching staff, and the players. We are building something special in Guaynabo and I feel very excited to be a part of the franchise’s growth and development.”

On January 29, the Board of Directors of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) approved July 8 as the start date of the 2021 season, but the actual start date could change based on ongoing health issues surrounding COVID-19. The deadline for teams to submit their reserves list is February 15. Other important dates for the upcoming BSN season are the rookie draft on April 10 and the start of free agency on April 11. Training camp dates have yet to be announced.

The historic Mets franchise rejoined the BSN last season as an expansion team. Guaynabo hopes to carry over their momentum from a season ago when they fell just short of their first finals appearance since 1993.

“The way last season ended was bittersweet,” said Mets co-owner Marc Grossman. “It raised the expectations for this organization, and now we’re out to prove that our success was not a fluke. I have the fullest confidence in Ana and Chris to build a team that competes for a championship again this year and for years to come.”
