The Guaynabo Mets of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) have named Omar González interim head coach, the team announced.
Hired by the team as an assistant in December, González has coached basketball professionally for more than three decades, including stints as head coach of the Puerto Rico men’s and women’s national basketball teams and multiple turns as a BSN head coach.
“We have high expectations for Omar and for the season,” said Mets co-owner Marc Grossman. “He has proven that he knows how to win in this highly competitive league and the team is confident he can lead us back to the playoffs.”
González won four international silver medals and three international gold medals with the Women’s National Team and a silver medal with the Men’s National Team. He is the first Puerto Rican basketball coach to lead both teams to medals. He led the Piratas de Quebradillas to the 2009 BSN final and was at the helm of the Capitanes de Arecibo when they made the 2014 championship series. He also coached Caciques de Humacao to the playoffs in the 2013 season after leading the team to its then-best record in franchise history.
Outside of Puerto Rico, González has coached for the Center for Basketball Development (CBD) at Monteverde Academy in Florida, a program that has won multiple national championships and produced several NBA first round draft picks.
Alvin Cruz, a 22-year veteran of the BSN, and Raymond Cintron will serve as assistants to González.
Guaynabo has a current roster of Ángel Álamo, Reynaldo Balkman, Onzie Branch, Gary Browne, E.J. Crawford, Mitch Creek, Ed Davis, Jonathan Han, Miguel Ángel López Jr., William Martinez, Wil Martínez, Khary Mauras, Oénis Medina, Jermaine Miranda, William Orozco, Jaysean Paige, and Timothy Soares.
