OCTOBER 8, 2021 METSBASKETBALL
The Guaynabo Mets are back in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) playoffs for the second straight year. Starting on October 11, they’re out for redemption.
With a victory over Fajardo on Monday, the Mets locked down the third postseason spot in the BSN’s B Division. Guaynabo, which will play Ponce in a quarterfinals best-of-seven series, is positioned to build on its success of a season ago, when the team came within a game of reaching the finals.
“Making the playoffs in such a competitive league is a significant accomplishment,” said Head Coach Brad Greenberg. “When I arrived on September 1, the team was 8-11 and had lost some heartbreakingly close games. But the players proved to be tremendously resilient and deserve all the credit for turning things around.”
Guaynabo has dubbed 2021 the “redemption” season—a reference to the team coming up just short of the championship round in 2020. A lot has changed for the Mets—and the BSN—since then. This postseason will see a return to the packed stadiums and playoff intensity BSN fans are used to after last year’s tournament was played without spectators in a bubble at the Río Grande Wyndham Resort. The Mets have a number of new faces on the roster and a new head coach in Greenberg. But the team’s goal remains the same: to return Guaynabo to the top of the Puerto Rican basketball world.
That goal is well within reach following an uneven start to the 2021 campaign. Playing unselfishly and with increasing confidence, Guaynabo has won 9 of its last 12 games. The Mets lead the league in scoring and assists per game, commits the fewest turnovers per game, and is among the league leaders in three point field goals made per game. However, the team understands that postseason success will require an even stronger effort.
“Now the challenge is to take it up another notch,” said Greenberg. “For us to advance in the playoffs we will need to play to our strengths while improving on the defensive end of the floor.”Guaynabo begins their first round series on October 11 in Ponce. They’ll return to Mario Morales Coliseum for a playoff home game on October 13. Mets playoff tickets are available at MetsBasketball.com/tickets.
