GUAYNABO METS SIGN EX-NBA PLAYER DANIEL HAMILTON

The Guaynabo Mets of Puerto Rico’s Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) have signed Daniel Hamilton—an import player with NBA experience—ahead of the 2020 regular season opener.

Hamilton played college basketball for the Connecticut Huskies from 2014 – 2016, starting all 71 games of his two-year career while averaging 11.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. Known for his versatility, Hamilton became just the second UConn freshman to finish a season with at least 300 points, 200 rebounds, and 100 assists. During his sophomore season, Hamilton was one of only two Division I players (along with number one NBA draft pick Ben Simmons) to register 450 points, 300 rebounds, and 150 assists.

The Denver Nuggets selected Hamilton 56th overall in the 2016 NBA draft but traded him to the Oklahoma City Thunder on draft night. From 2016 to 2017, he split time between the Thunder and their G League affiliate, the Blue. Hamilton spent the 2018 -2019 season with the Atlanta Hawks and played in 19 games. He was later included on the Cleveland Cavaliers’ training camp roster.

“Daniel has a great all-around game,” said Mets co-owner Marc Grossman. “He’s a triple-double threat every time he steps on the court. He can score, rebound, pass, and defend, and has good size for his position. I’m excited to have him on board.”

Hamilton is the expansion Mets’ second of three allotted import players. In January, the Mets signed 7′ 1″ (215.9 cm) phenom Isaiah Austin. Import players can be swapped at any time. The Mets could look to add another player from a team talent search led by Metta World Peace and his XvsX Sports, which are holding open tryouts both stateside and in Puerto Rico.

Hamilton and Austin join a Mets roster that includes Angel Alamo, Francis Jonathan Han, Carlos Emory, Rafael Perez, Tyquan Rolon, Miguel Ali Berdiel, Weiyinmi Rose, Lonnie Rivera, Ansel Guzman, and Rakeem Christmas. Coach Carlos Calcaño has expressed optimism about the Mets roster ahead of the 2020 season as they look to compete for the franchise’s fourth championship and first since 1989. Owners Marc Grossman and Mark Linder resurrected the franchise following a five-year absence. The BSN regular season begins March 1.
